Description
This tool is made from quality forged steel and has a sturdy hardwood handle, which has been machined to a very smooth finish. The oboe mandrel is designed to be held between the thumb, index and middle fingers and rests neatly in the palm. The timber used is generally ebony, however occasionally we receive a lighter coloured wood from Chiarugi. The two different wood types are pictured.
This tool is designed to fit into the throat of the reed. It has a parabolic (or tapered) design, which is unique to Chiarugi, so it goes in further than standard long mandrels. This makes this mandrel ideally suited for reed forming and other tasks like shaping because it holds the reed securely beyond the staple.
When you have a tool this beautiful and well-made, you’re truly experiencing one of the joys of playing oboe! An oboe reed mandrel not only allows you to hold the reed easily while adjusting, maintaining making and forming reeds, it also holds and protects the essential internal shape of the reed thus protecting your reed and improving its longevity!
